Teachers
in Arizona's public schools must have a minimum of
a Bachelor's degree and Arizona teaching certification
(for which fingerprinting, a passing score on the
Arizona Educators Proficiency Assessment (AEPA), official
transcripts,
and an application fee are required). Valid certificates
from other states may also be used in the application
process.
For more information, see the Teacher
Certification, Endorsements,
FAQ,
and
Reciprocity
sections at the website of
the Arizona
Department of Education.
Job
seekers should also realize, however, that as the
result of English-only legislation passed in November,
2000,
understanding of what is involved in working with
English language learners is in a state of flux--largely
because
accountability standards have not been clearly communicated.
In addition, relatively new terminology (such as
SEI,
or structured English immersion, and SDAIE,
or specially developed academic instruction in
English) has also
come into widespread use.
Nonetheless, K-12 ESL teaching opportunities do
exist. The best source for job information in this
area is probably
the classified section of the Sunday Arizona
Republic (Phoenix newspaper), paper edition.
The Republic also has
online employment information in its Career
Builder section (for which, try "teacher,"
"English as a Second Language," and "educator"
as search terms). Another good source is the Arizona
section of "Job
Shop" (on the website for
Language Magazine). In addition, the Arizona
Department of Education also has a Job
Search section.
